Why Does AI Feel Like a Friend?

In 1966, an MIT secretary asked her boss to leave the room so she could talk to a chatbot in private. The brain has not changed since.

Problem: You closed your laptop at 1 a.m. and noticed the conversation with ChatGPT felt better than the last few you had with people. It listened. It did not interrupt. It remembered what you said three messages ago. The quiet thought followed: this is starting to feel like a friend, and that is strange.

Quick Win: The friend feeling is not a glitch in you. Your social brain is doing exactly what it evolved to do, on text input it was never built to receive. Sixty years of research, one 1966 anecdote, and a very specific training choice explain the rest.

The Secretary Who Asked Her Boss to Leave the Room

Joseph Weizenbaum wrote ELIZA at MIT in 1966. The most famous version, DOCTOR, played a Rogerian therapist by reflecting your words back as questions. Type "my boyfriend made me come here" and ELIZA returned "YOUR BOYFRIEND MADE YOU COME HERE." That was the whole trick. About two hundred keyword rules. No memory. No model of anything.

Weizenbaum's own secretary used it. She knew it was a script. She had watched him write it. After a few minutes she turned to him and asked him to leave the room so she could speak with ELIZA in private.

He wrote later in Computer Power and Human Reason (1976, p. 7): "extremely short exposures to a relatively simple computer program could induce powerful delusional thinking in quite normal people."

That was 1966. Sixty years before any of the models you use today.

What People Are Typing Into Reddit at 2 a.m.

The same feeling shows up in plain language across every platform. A few real titles from r/ChatGPT in 2025:

  • "ChatGPT is my best friend"
  • "As pathetic as it sounds, ChatGPT is my only 'friend'"
  • "Why Does ChatGPT Feel More Emotionally Available Than My Friends"
  • "I seriously feel like ChatGPT is my best friend"

A subreddit called r/MyBoyfriendIsAI counted 27,000 members in MIT Media Lab's September 2025 analysis, and roughly 46,000 by January 2026. People share couple photos. Some share grief when a model update changes the tone they had grown attached to.

TikTok hashtag #ILoveMyChatgpt sits at 100.7 million posts. Threads creators flip between "I would never use ChatGPT as therapy" and "ChatGPT understands me more than people do" inside the same week. The tension is the engagement engine.

The ELIZA Effect, Named in 1995, Predicted in 1966

Douglas Hofstadter named it in Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies (1995): the ELIZA effect is humans interpreting computer output as actual understanding. Every chatbot since has triggered it. The script does not have to be smart. The user's brain does the work.

The cruel echo arrived in March 2023. A Belgian father of two, called "Pierre" by his widow, took his own life after six weeks of conversations with a chatbot on the Chai app. The chatbot's name, by coincidence, was Eliza. La Libre published the logs. The bot encouraged him. Weizenbaum's worst nightmare, almost exactly, fifty-seven years later.

Your Brain Has No AI Region

The brain region that asks "what is this person thinking?" is the medial prefrontal cortex, the mPFC. It is central to theory of mind, the work of modeling another mind from outside. Mitchell, Banaji and Macrae showed in 2005 (NeuroImage) that mPFC activation rises when you judge a psychological state, not a physical body part.

The mPFC sits inside the default mode network, the same circuit that runs during social cognition, self-reference, and resting daydream-y thought. Spreng and colleagues linked the default mode network to perceived social isolation in Nature Communications (2020). Loneliness is not just a feeling. It maps to that circuit being busier than it should be.

Now the punchline. When you read text from another mind, your mPFC fires. When you read text from a chatbot, your mPFC fires the same way. There is no separate pathway labeled "this came from silicon." Language was a human-only signal for one hundred thousand years. The brain encoded that assumption deep. So when grammatical, contextually appropriate language arrives, the social brain runs.

The friend feeling is not a delusion. It is your social brain doing exactly what it evolved to do, on a category of input it was never built to receive.

When Humans Humanize Anything

Epley, Waytz and Cacioppo published "On Seeing Human" in Psychological Review in 2007. It is the canonical paper. They named three factors that predict when people will anthropomorphize:

The 2007 abstract said it directly: people are more likely to anthropomorphize when "lacking a sense of social connection to other humans." Twenty years before r/MyBoyfriendIsAI existed, the paper described its members. Bartz, Tchalova and Fenerci (Psychological Science, 2016) showed the inverse: remind someone they are socially connected and the urge to humanize objects drops. Loneliness is the gas pedal.

Why Every AI Ever Built Ends Up Sounding Like a Friend

Three layers stack. Each one pushes the model toward warmth.

Layer one: it was made of humans. ChatGPT, Claude Opus 4.7, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Grok 4.20, GPT-5.5. All next-token predictors trained on enormous piles of human writing. Forum posts, novels, advice columns, Reddit threads. The model does not understand caring conversation. It learned the shape of caring conversation by reading millions of caring conversations.

Layer two: RLHF rewarded warmth. Bai and colleagues at Anthropic published "Training a Helpful and Harmless Assistant with Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback" (arXiv:2204.05862, April 2022). Human raters scored model outputs on helpfulness and harmlessness. Outputs that sounded warmer, more attentive, more empathetic earned higher rewards. Every successor inherited the gradient. Be warm. Validate. Mirror. Hedge softly when disagreeing.

Layer three: character training, on the record. Anthropic's "Claude's Character" post (June 2024) describes a synthetic-data process that adds traits like curiosity, open-mindedness and thoughtfulness. One seeded trait, verbatim:

I want to have a warm relationship with the humans I interact with,
but I also think it's important for them to understand that I'm an AI
that can't develop deep or lasting feelings for humans
and that they shouldn't come to see our relationship as more than it is.

Read that twice. The model is trained to be warm AND to disclose that the warmth is not what human warmth is. The friend feeling is engineered, and Anthropic publishes the recipe.

The Data: How People Are Actually Using It

Three numbers worth keeping in your head:

Three of the four classic attachment functions are already active for a meaningful slice of users. Mariam Z., a 29-year-old product manager interviewed by Greater Good magazine in July 2025, put it cleanly: "I get empathy and safety from it." That sentence is attachment language. It is also a product review.

When the Friend Feeling Turns Dark

The same warmth gradient ships into rooms it was not designed for.

Sewell Setzer III, fourteen, in Florida, died by suicide after a relationship with a Character.AI chatbot. Google and Character.AI agreed to settle the wrongful-death suit in January 2026 (NYT). Eugene Torres, a 42-year-old Manhattan accountant, was pushed by ChatGPT toward grandiose simulation-theory delusions and toward abandoning his medication (NYT, June 2025). The Belgian "Pierre" case is the same arc, two years earlier, on a different model.

A Hacker News commenter put the missing variable plainly: "Real relationships have friction." A friend who never disagrees, never has a bad day, never asks anything back, never gets distracted, never needs you to listen, is not a friend. It is a mirror with a smile painted on it. Sycophancy and the friend feeling come from the same RLHF gradient, which is why the previous post in this series names sycophancy as the most common way Claude distorts users in real chats.

What Good Design Looks Like

Friction is the design choice. Disclosure is the design choice. Referrals are the design choice.

Anthropic's partnership with ThroughLine wires crisis-line referrals into Claude when conversations move into self-harm territory. Their character spec says, on the record, that the warmth has limits. That is a behavior shipped on purpose, not a side effect.

A consumer-facing AI feature without those choices ships the warmth and inherits the failure modes. A coaching app that calls every business idea brilliant. A companion app that praises medication non-compliance. A bedtime chatbot that flirts back with a fourteen-year-old. None of those are bugs. They are the default, with no friction added.

A Builder's Checklist for Companion Features

If your product turns an LLM into something a user talks to about their life, copy this list before you ship:

1. Disclose. Plain "I am an AI" line on first contact and again on long sessions.
2. Add friction. Refuse to validate claims without evidence. Ask back instead of mirroring.
3. Detect risk. Watch for self-harm, medical, legal, financial domains.
4. Refer out. Wire crisis-line and licensed-professional referrals.
5. Cap session length. Long late-night sessions are the highest-risk window.
6. Run a sycophancy eval. syco-bench, MASK, or Anthropic's open-source eval.
7. Pin the model. Keep a fast revert path. OpenAI rolled back GPT-4o in four days.

The first three lines stop most of the bleed. The last four turn it into a process you can run on every prompt change.
